根据经验值建议在起跑后10公里起，每5~10公里服用1粒，根据自身的出汗量、运动能力、温湿度环境条件下自行调整。同时，盐丸不是随意而吃，盐丸是必须要与水同服的。
在运动中人体大量缺水，同时流失电解质，只补充水分而没有电解质的配合在严重时会造成低钠血症，俗称“水中毒”，因此补充电解质与补充水分是相伴相生的。而没有补充水而只是嚼服或含服盐丸则会造成电解质进入肠道后浓度过高，会将血液中的水分进一步析出，使人体更加严重失水。
盐丸的正确服用方法为用水吞服，类似药片的用法。服用盐丸必须要与水同服，因而吞服是最佳方式。电解质具有一定的咸涩口感，同时饮用150~200ml的水是必须的，这有利于盐丸的顺利吞咽及最快速进入肠道吸收。
